Lithium batteries are widely used in phones, electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Across these applications, temperature can influence how a battery behaves.
In low-temperature environments, lithium batteries are designed to operate within their specified temperature range, while users may notice that charging and discharging power becomes lower than in milder conditions.
These changes are part of how lithium batteries respond to cold.
When the temperature drops, the electrochemical reactions inside the battery cells slow down, and internal resistance increases. If the charging current is higher than what the battery can best accept under cold conditions, the risk of lithium plating may increase, which can affect cell health and long-term battery life.
At the same time, when higher charging current is used in low-temperature conditions, the battery voltage may rise more quickly. This can make SOC estimation more sensitive and may lead to minor SOC fluctuations or jumps. To help minimise SOC jumping, charging power may need to be appropriately limited.
To help manage these conditions, Swatten batteries are equipped with a professional BMS low-temperature protection strategy.
When the battery cell temperature drops, the system automatically adjusts charging and discharging current and power. In colder conditions, charging may be further limited or temporarily paused to help protect the battery from potential long-term damage.
So in outdoor low-temperature environments, slower charging or reduced discharging power may simply reflect the system’s protection response.
It often means the system is applying its protection strategy as designed.
This strategy is based on two key principles:
1. It follows the natural chemical characteristics of lithium batteries. Low temperature slows down battery activity, increases internal resistance, affects charging performance, and may make SOC estimation more likely to fluctuate under higher charging current.
2. It supports long-term battery health. Swatten BMS actively manages current and power to help protect the cells and extend battery service life.
For projects that require higher charging power in low-temperature environments, Swatten can provide remote software support, helping balance charging performance, battery safety and long-term reliability.
Swatten batteries can be used in real outdoor installation scenarios where permitted by the specific product model, installation manual and local regulations. For outdoor use, we recommend following professional installation guidance and selecting a protected, weatherproof location with reduced temperature fluctuation whenever possible.
In simple terms:
Outdoor installation can be supported under suitable conditions. Reduced power in low temperatures can be expected. SOC fluctuation may occur under higher charging current. BMS protection is designed to safeguard the battery. Long-term battery health comes first.
Swatten designs energy storage systems for real-world environments — where performance, safety and long-term reliability work together.
